PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) The U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary will be in Pierre tomorrow along with the Administrator of the Federal Transit Administration to attend the grand opening of the newly-expanded facilities for River Cities Public Transit. There will be a short program tomorrow morning at River Cities Transit-starting at 10:45, which will feature comments from Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood and FTA Administrator Peter Rogoff. The two were invited to Pierre by South Dakota’s U.S. Senator Tim Johnson-who will also be present Wednesday. River Citizens Public Transit Executive Director Ron Baumgart says that being able to have the national transportation leaders in Pierre for the open house will be an honor.
After the program ends about 11:30 a.m. Baumgart says there will be refreshments and the new facility will be open for a few hours for public tours. The remodel and expansion project of the transit facility was funded in part with $3.9 million dollars in federal funds. Baumgart says River Cities Transit has seen a number of changes and has grown significantly since it started in the late 1990’s.
Baumgart says the project was completed earlier this year and has been a nice addition for River Cities Transit.
Baumgart says that he and some other transit providers will get a chance to speak with Secretary LaHood before the open house and will likely ask about the new transportation bill and other transit related questions. Also expected to be on hand at the Grand Opening Wednesday will be South Dakota Transportation Secretary Darin Bergquist, Pierre Mayor Laurie Gill, and Fort Pierre Mayor Sam Tidball. River Cities Public Transit is located at 1600 East Dakota Avenue.
