PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) The Pierre Rural Fire Department spent about 3 ½ hours at the site of a fire at Farm Island Recreation Area on Monday. Pierre Rural Fire Chief Jason Roggow says the fire was reported about 3:45 p.m. by someone who noted smoke and some flames in one part of the property-east of Pierre. Roggow says firefighters found a fire burning in a spot between the campgrounds and Highway 34. The blaze was located near where fire pit ashes are dumped-and close to piles of timbers, cut trees, logs and other items. Roggow says the fire burned about ½ acre of grass and was kept from burning more grass by a two track road which corralled the blaze into a small perimeter. However, it did extend into nearby tree piles, which were harder to extinguish. Roggow says some of the branch and wood piles were big and firefighters had to let them burn down. He says G F & P brought in a loader to help fight the fires in the piles. Roggow says fire pits around the campgrounds were cleaned out on Sunday and their contents were placed at the ash dump. He says yesterday’s winds may have flared up embers, causing the fire.
