PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) The Pierre Aquatics Center will be closed for as long as two weeks starting this Sunday. YMCA Director Jeff Filipek says the center will reopen in about 10-14 days. Filipek says during the last maintenance shutdown at the aquatics center, a product that was used to take the iron out of the water did not work. Pierre’s Parks and Recreation Director Tom Farnsworth says in a press release that the water is clear and the chemistry is safe for swimming, but the iron caused staining on the surface of the pool area. The city and Y staff met and agreed to take care of the aesthetic issue now before several swimming programs kick into gear and the swim team begins extensive use of the facility. Filipek says that although the aquatics center will be closed for a short time, the Y pool will still be open to accommodate those who take part in lap and recreational swimming.
