PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) The Central South Dakota Retired Senior Volunteer Program gathered food items and cash donations as part of a 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance Food Drive. To honor those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, a “Day of Service and Remembrance” was created. The federally recognized day encourages the organization of events that fulfill a need in communities across the country. The local RSVP organization chose to put on a food drive to benefit the Pierre Area Food Pantry. RSVP’s Katie Nagel says last Saturday, three RSVP volunteers collected over 340 food items and several cash donations in just two hours at Dakotamart. They met the goal they had to fill up a car from top to bottom with donations. Also, Tuesday, September 11 wrapped up RSVP’s two week long food drive. Staff from St. Mary’s Healthcare Center and various volunteers provided cash donations and food items at RSVP offices. Nagel says a total of $170 in cash donations and over 400 food items were collected. For details on the organization and the work it does, visit http://www.rsvpsd.org/
