PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) The South Dakota Department of Transportation is asking for the cooperation of state producers in making sure that processed hay is removed from highway right of ways. Hay must be removed from the right of way within 30 days of being processed or no later than October 1-according to state regulations. The DOT says removing hay bales from the highway right of way is important for the safety of motorists. The bales or stacks can be a hazard for vehicles that are forced to leave the road and sometimes the hay can restrict a driver’s sight distance. Hay left in road ditches late in the year can also cause snowdrifts across the highway.
