GETTYSBURG, S.D. – (DRG News) An accident that occurred while work was being done at a sewer lift station has claimed the lives of two Gettysburg men. Potter County Sheriff Curt Hamburger says the accident was reported about 1:20 p.m. Tuesday. He says the men-50-year-old Kirk Hansen and his son, 20-year-old Erik Hansen-were overcome by sewer gases Tuesday at the West Whitlock Resort area-along the river west of Gettysburg in Potter County. He says the work was being done as part of plans to put in new sewer lines for new trailers being added at the resort. Hamburger says the younger Hansen succumbed to gases while he worked down in the concrete enclosure and his father tried to rescue him. Kirk Hansen was pulled out of the lift station by two other citizens. Erik Hanson was deceased at the scene and Kirk Hansen was transported to a Sioux Falls hospital where he passed away. The two citizens that assisted at the location were treated at the hospital in Gettysburg and released. The Gettysburg Fire and Rescue Squad used equipment to pull Erik Hanson from the lift station. Hamburger says the Occupational Safety and Health Administration from Bismarck will be coming to investigate the incident. The Hansen’s ran and worked for Hansen Plumbing of Gettysburg.
