VIVIAN, S.D. – (DRG News) Tomorrow, the town of Vivian will be the place to be as the Vivian High School Alumni Association and community members are hosting a “Rock n’ Roll Reunion”. The event is being set up to honor Vivian’s Dance Hall being inducted into the South Dakota Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame last April. Alumni events will be held beginning at 6:00 p.m. Starting at 9:00 p.m., there will be a dance at the recently honored historical dance hall. Long-time Vivian resident Lonis Wendt, who is a member of Vivian’s Class of 1951, is helping to organize the dance and says tying the event in with the reunion will make for a great day.
Wendt says the band at tomorrow night’s public dance will be DJ and the Cats-which played a Vivian dance in 1957. Wendt says two of the five band members were from nearby Presho and the group was honored by the South Dakota Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame at the same time as the Vivian Dance Hall last spring.
The band is expected to play tunes from the 50’s and 60’s. Wendt says it should be a great evening and says one of the members of DJ and the Cats-Travis Hutchison-commented that Saturday’s dance “should really be fun, with the Inductee’s playing in the Inductee!”
Wendt says the tiny town of Vivian had a reputation for years as being the place to be on Saturday night and bands from all over played there to thousands of people. He says Vivian drew dancers from all throughout central and western SD.
Wendt says the dance will be a thank you to many area communities-because the reason the Vivian Hall is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is because people came to dances there for years. Wendt also had his own country/rock band and says he is proud that he is one of the Vivian area musicians who played in the Vivian Hall. Tomorrow’s dance will be from 9:00 p.m. to midnight. There is no admission to the dance, but Wendt says a free will offering will be taken.
