Small Plane Crash Kills One Person This Morning at Pierre Regional Airport

Smoke from August 28 Plane Crash

PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) One person died this morning after a single engine aircraft crashed while taking off from the Pierre Regional Airport. Pierre Airport Manager Mike Isaacs says that the crash was reported about 9:45 a.m. this morning and occurred as the smaller general aviation aircraft was taking off on one of the airport runways. The crash occurred midfield-just southeast of the airport terminal. Smoke was visible from a distance after the crash was reported-as the plane started on fire. Isaacs says the aircraft was destroyed and there is one confirmed fatality. He says it doesn’t appear that anyone else was on board. Officials are in the early stages of an investigation and Isaacs says they are not releasing any other information at this time. The FAA is responding to the crash and should be at the airport soon. Isaacs wants travelers to know that the airport is still open and flights are being allowed to come and go as scheduled. Pierre Airport Firefighters were first at the scene. Also responding were the Pierre Fire Department, Pierre Police Department, South Dakota Highway Patrol and American Medical Response Ambulance.
