PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) A Pierre man was arrested after a chase with law enforcement Wednesday. Pierre Police Captain Elton Blemaster says the incident began yesterday morning about 11:15 a.m. when an officer noted a vehicle traveling north on Poplar Avenue near Jefferson School. Blemaster says the officer recognized the driver and believed he had revoked driving privileges. The officer then did a license check, which confirmed the revocation. The driver, 63-year-old Paul E. Hansen was pulled over near the intersection of SD Highway 1804 and US Highway 14. However, as the officer approached the vehicle, Hansen pulled away and began driving north on 1804. Blemaster says the vehicle reached speeds of more than 70 MPH. The Nissan van then turned onto Range Road, and eventually came to a stop in the 2900 block of Buhl Avenue. After stopping the vehicle, Hansen took off on foot. Blemaster says Hansen refused to comply with the officer’s orders after the officer caught up with him and a taser was used to take Hansen into custody. Hansen was charged with at least five different counts, including Driving Under Revocation, Aggravated Eluding, Obstructing an Officer, DUI-4th Offense and Open Container in a Motor Vehicle. After his arrest, Hansen was transported to the Hughes County Jail.
