PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) A Pierre teen is working to help a local organization, as part of her effort to earn a Girl Scout Gold Award. Traci Corcoran is a Junior at Riggs High School and is with Girl Scout Troop 65691. She says she has been part of the girls program since she was in kindergarten. Corcoran wants to raise money to pay for an enclosed trailer that will be used by the Pierre Area Referral Service to deliver food for its Back Pack Program and for the Senior Box Program. She says PARS will be able to use the 6 X 10 trailer to transport food for the programs to various destinations in Pierre and Fort Pierre. She hopes to raise just over $4,000 to pay for the trailer and for supplies to construct shelves. After completing required paperwork, Corcoran is now starting the fundraiser and hopes to have the project completed within the next year.
Corcoran has been working on organizing the project since last October. Corcoran says businesses that donate more than $500 toward the project will have their names placed on the outside of the trailer. She has arranged for volunteers from River Center Church to help her layout and build shelves inside the trailer, once it is purchased. Any extra funds above the cost for the trailer project will go to Pierre Area Referral Service. Pierre Area Referral Service provides 90,000 pounds of food per year to those that need it. Its backpack program sends out food sacks during the school year with weekend meals and snacks for as many as 300 youngsters.
