PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) Groundbreaking was held Tuesday for Pierre’s newest rental housing development. Highlands Ridge Apartments LLC is being constructed by Mark and Glennis Zarecky just west of Beck Motors. The three story, 57-unit apartment building at 2412 East 4th Street will have 41-one bedroom units and 16 –two bedroom units. Glennis Zarecky told those at Tuesday’s groundbreaking that the new units have been made possible through the help of many different entities. The apartments will be targeted toward local residents with average incomes who are looking for new rentals with more amenities. Glennis Zarecky says plans call for the complex to be complete in less than a year.
She says there is already interest in the apartments and people will be able to reserve units via their Midwest Construction website.
Jim Protexter Executive Director of the Pierre Economic Development Corporation was part of the groundbreaking ceremony yesterday and hopes to see the new complex be the first of others to be added in the Pierre area.
Arrangements are being made for a Minnesota company to conduct a housing study for the Pierre/Fort Pierre area and Protexter says it’s hoped that the analysis of the local housing needs will be complete later this year.
Protexter says the housing study will be beneficial to the area in many ways.
At yesterday’s groundbreaking for the new Highlands Ridge Apartments, Pierre Mayor Laurie Gill said that the community has been dealing with the need for affordable housing for the past ten years and she thanked Midwest Construction for helping address the shortage.
