PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) A fire east of Pierre yesterday burned about 15 acres of hay ground. Sean Kruger, Assistant Chief of the Pierre Rural Fire Department, says the fire was started by a windrower and burned lines of cut grass, hay bales, uncut Conservation Reserve Program grass and a few trees. Firefighters from the Pierre Rural Department and the Fort Pierre National Grasslands fought the blaze, which scorched property just west of the intersection of 201st Street and 301st Avenue-about ten miles east of Pierre on the north side of Highways 14/83. Firefighters were assisted with water supplies by Wilbur Ellis, which brought a few semis of water, about 6,000 gallons each. Firefighters were called to the fire about 4:25 p.m. and were there for about four hours.
