PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) The Pierre Elk’s Lodge #1953 sponsored South Dakota Kite Day in Pierre’s Hilger’s Gulch yesterday. The gathering-which offered kids a free kite and a large open area to fly it in-was said to have drawn at least 300 youngsters. Organizer Steve Wegman says despite the fact that winds weren’t ideal for kite flying-Kite Day turned out great!
Wegman says the Elk’s Lodge decided to set up the event as another fun activity for local kids to enjoy.
Wegman says it’s very likely that 2013 will bring another South Dakota Kite Day to the area.
Wegman says the local Elk’s Lodge is known for its involvement in several other events in the Pierre/Fort Pierre area.
Elks Lodge members volunteered to help with yesterday’s Kite Day-assembling the kites, offering water and lessons on how to properly fly kites. The kites were provided by a $2,000 grant from the National Elks Foundation.
