WENDTE, S.D. – (DRG News) The Fort Pierre Fire Department and Hughes/Stanley County Emergency Management Office responded to a diesel fuel spill Thursday that occurred after about a half dozen train cars derailed on railroad tracks along Bad River Road in the Wendte area. Hughes/Stanley County Emergency Manager Rob Fines says crews were called to the scene about 6:45 p.m. Thursday. He says about a half dozen freight train cars–that were part of a longer train–derailed off the tracks. In the process, a small hole was punctured in a fuel tank which was in a string of maintenance cars on tracks alongside the derailed cars. Fines says about 20-40 gallons of diesel fuel spilled on the ground before the spill was stopped. Fines says Canadian Pacific Railway workers were at the scene yesterday working to put the derailed cars back on the tracks.
