PIERRE, S.D. – Your Pierre Post 8 American Legion Baseball team’s record stands at 18-17 in American Legion play for the season so far. In their first 14 games they posted a record of 3-11. Since then they are 15-6. They face some tough games in the week ahead, with a trip to face Sioux Falls East and Sioux Falls West in single games on Wednesday at Sioux Falls followed by a visit on Thursday from Bismarck for a doubleheader. The remainder of the regular-season schedule has Pierre traveling to Sturgis for a doubleheader next Tuesday, before Mitchell pays a visit to Hyde Stadium for a doubleheader on July 18 and a regular season finale from the new Sioux Falls-area squad, Renner Post 307, on July 20. The regional tournament starts July 25 at Sturgis and pits Post 8 against Sturgis in the opening game. The winner faces Spearfish that night, while Rapid City has a showdown between Post 320 and Post 22. The loser of the Pierre-Sturgis game faces the loser of the 320-22 game in an elimination game that same evening. The top two finishers from the five-team field automatically advance from the three-day tournament to the South Dakota American Legion state tournament that starts Aug. 1 in Aberdeen. Under the new play-in system adopted for the 2012 season, the third-place finishers from the west and southeast regionals will square off on the Sunday between regionals and state to determine which team gets the eighth and final slot in the state field. The slot formerly was reserved for the B division state champion, but the two divisions are completely separate starting this year.
