Governor Seeking Independent Review of GF&P

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) – Gov. Dennis Daugaard is calling for an independent review of the state Game, Fish & Parks Department, with management of mountain lions and elk in the Black Hills to be among the areas scrutinized.
Chief of staff Dusty Johnson confirmed the upcoming review to the Rapid City Journal on Friday.
Johnson says it has been a long time since the state has had an independent analysis of game management and department management.
GF&P Secretary Jeff Vonk says he welcomes the review, which will be done by an outside group selected by the governor’s office through a process of proposals.
Some in the Black Hills say the mountain lion population has been allowed to grow too large and is devastating deer and elk herds.
