PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) The Mni Sose Wakpa Wacipi (or Missouri River Powwow) will be held next weekend, July 13-15 at the powwow grounds near Oahe Dam. The event is open to the public and includes Grand Entry Friday at 7:00 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday at 1:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Event categories include Golden Age Men’s and Women’s for those 50 and older, Men’s and Women’s Traditional, Teen Boy’s and Girl’s Traditional for ages 13-17 and Junior Boy’s and Girl’s Traditional for ages 6-12. Admission is $5 for a one day pass and $12 for a three day pass. Those over 65 and under age four can attend free. Visitors will receive a Bison/Buffalo jerk package with details about the animals and how Native Americans use buffalo-including for food, clothing, shelters and various tools. Also available will be Lakota popcorn and a powwow booklet, which explains powwow etiquettes, the history behind powwows, the dances, dance styles and the Lakota flag song in Lakota and English. Visitors will also be able to take part in inter-tribal dancing; there will be various food and Native American item vendors and more. The Master of Ceremony will be Jerry Dearly and the co-Master of Ceremony will be J.R. LaPlante-Secretary of Tribal Relations. Vern Sevier will serve as Arena Director.
