FORT PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) A Fort Pierre man was sentenced yesterday for his guilty plea to Aggravated Assault-Domestic Violence. 39-year-old Ronald Lee Berens, Jr. initially faced six charges after authorities said he shot a rifle at his girlfriend on April 29. In a Fort Pierre courtroom yesterday, Berens was given a sentence of 10 years in prison by Judge Patricia DeVaney. He was credited for time he has been in jail since his arrest and was ordered to receive inpatient alcohol treatment and counseling for anger control and domestic violence.
Berens was arrested after an argument he had with his girlfriend escalated. Berens discharged a firearm at the woman as she ran away from an apartment the two shared.
In May, Berens pled to the Aggravated Assault offense and to having been previously convicted of a felony in 2009. He faced an enhanced penalty of up to 25 years in prison for his admission to being a habitual offender.
Berens was remanded to the custody of the Stanley County Sheriff after Tuesday’s sentencing to be transported to the South Dakota Penitentiary.
