EUGENE, Ore. – University of South Dakota assistant track and field coach Derek Miles will compete in pole vault at the U.S. Olympic Trials today in Eugene, Ore. Miles, a 1996 USD graduate and member of the Coyote Sports Hall of Fame, is aiming for his third trip to the Olympics in the event. Miles is the pole vault coach for the Coyotes. Miles’ quest for a third Olympic berth begins with today’s qualifying round. Depending on heights cleared in qualifying rounds, between 12 and 16 athletes will qualify for the finals, which are Thursday in Eugene. The Tea resident qualified for the Olympics in 2004, finishing seventh, and took fourth at the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008.
