PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) Area rescuers spent more than an hour checking on the report of an abandoned boat washed up on shore near the West Bend Camping Area yesterday. Emergency dispatchers were told about 4:30 p.m. that a boat was found near the North Bend Boat Ramp and there was no one nearby. Hughes/Stanley County Emergency Management Director Rob Fines says several agencies were mobilized with concern for the occupants of the boat. Game, Fish and Parks; the Hughes County Sheriff’s Department; Lower Brule Sioux Tribe Law Enforcers, Emergency Management and fire crews and others made their way toward where the boat was at to investigate. Fines says after checks were done and some phone calls were made, it was discovered that two men had left the boat on shore after experiencing windy conditions on the water Tuesday. The men then returned to their homes in Minnesota; but had made arrangements with a Chamberlain boat dealer to come retrieve the boat. A response by the Pierre Rescue Squad was cancelled before it started; as was a search by Game, Fish and Parks boats, an air search and a ground search.
