PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) Over $61,000 dollars was raised for this year’s Hughes/Stanley County Relay for Life. The event was held last week. Charlene Lund of the American Cancer Society in Pierre says there were 25 teams with 208 registered walkers. She says with the addition of walkers’ family members and friends, its believed that there were around 500 people attending the 12-hour event, which started last Friday. The silent auction, relay store and the Exchange Club concession stand brought in $11,000. $44,000 was raised by participating teams through luminarias and fundraisers they held. $12,000 came from 30 business sponsors. Brightly colored luminarias were new to this year’s Relay. Lund says they fit with the theme of Carnival of Colours-A Celebration of Hope. A total of 18,500 luminarias were lit up, in honor of and in memory of those who have had cancer. Lund says the Survivor Reception had 88 registered survivors who wore purple shirts and made the first Relay lap Friday night. The Relay for Life was held June 8 and 9 at Pierre’s Hollister Field.
