PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) A local insurance company has played a role in adding a new member to the Pierre Fire Department. State Farm Insurance Potrzeba Agency donated a State Farm bear costume to the PFD on Tuesday. State Farm’s Becki Potrzeba says she wanted to assist the department and believed that offering a new bear costume for its use would be just the way to do it.
State Farm has used the bear mascot for many years and Potrzeba has had her own costume for about the past ten years. She says she utilizes it for community events like parades and open houses.
Deputy Fire Chief Ian Paul says the costume is going to be an excellent addition to the local department. He says this is one of the first times the department has had a mascot costume.
Paul says the costume will be used mostly for fire prevention activities, but will also be used for other area events.
Department leadership will decide whether or not to hold a mascot naming contest sometime in the future.
Paul says the department hopes to put the costume to good use right away. It was worn for the first time Tuesday by fireman Paul Kenefick-Aschoff, and Paul says he doesn’t think they will have a problem finding other members to wear the costume when it’s used for future fire prevention efforts.
