MURDO, S.D. – (DRG News) A fire at an unoccupied farmstead destroyed four buildings yesterday. Midland and Murdo fire crews responded to the blaze, which occurred in western Jones County, about five miles north of I-90. Rich Sylva of the Murdo Fire Department says firefighters from Murdo were called to assist with the fire about 12:55 p.m. Monday. Sylva says it’s believed that the fire started in a detached garage and winds spread the flames to other buildings. Sylva says three structures were already destroyed and a fourth had started on fire when Murdo firefighters arrived. Fire crews were able to save a few of the buildings–however–Sylva says about eight to ten acres of grass caught on fire before the blaze was suppressed. Sylva says the buildings contained several years of items collected from auctions and he did not have an estimate of dollar loss. One firefighter sustained a minor injury in the blaze and fire crews were able to leave the scene by about 5:30 p.m. Monday.
