PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) A Pierre man was arrested for several charges this morning after the Hughes County Sheriff’s Department investigated vandalism and burglary reports at a Blunt store–and the theft of a vehicle from a Pierre business. Sergeant Darin Johnson of the Hughes County Sheriff’s Department says his office was called to the Blunt Cash Store about six this morning where it was said that the front of the store had been damaged and some items were taken. It was found that someone had driven a vehicle into the store early this morning and took a 24-pack of beer and a pack of cigarettes. The vehicle was removed before employees arrived to open the store for the day. A few hours later, a vehicle was reported stolen from the parking lot at Butler Machinery on Highway 14. The unlocked 1995 Ford Thunderbird had been left at the business with the keys inside. Johnson says around 9:30 a.m., employees at the Hughes County Jail reported that a car had driven onto the lawn of the jail and almost hit the building. A man came into the 24/7 door and said he wanted to turn himself in. Johnson says during an interview with the man, 35-year-old Ryan Sholes admitted that he stole the car and damaged the Blunt Cash Store. Sholes is jailed on felony charges of Grand Theft of a Motor Vehicle, Intentional Damage to Property-1st Degree, Burglary-3rd Degree and DUI-4th Offense. He also faces misdemeanor charges of Driving Under Revocation and Open Container in a Motor Vehicle. Johnson says the stolen vehicle had been taken around 2:30 a.m. this morning and it sustained minor damage. The store’s damage is believed to be about $10,000.
