PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) A former Pierre teacher has accepted the position of Principal for Washington and McKinley Elementary Schools in Pierre. Kelly Hansen, who worked for four years as a teacher and coach at Georgia Morse Middle School, was chosen from five people interviewed to replace Rob Coverdale. Coverdale will become a second assistant principal at Riggs High School when the new school year starts. Pierre School Superintendent Dr. Kelly Glodt says 19 people expressed interest in the principal’s position and of those, five were interviewed. Glodt says the interview process involved a tour of the schools for the finalists–led by former principal and curriculum director Ruth Smith–and interviews with Coverdale and a team made up of teachers, classified staff and parents from McKinley and Washington. Glodt and other administrators also met with each of the five finalists. Hansen was chosen for the job after the process was complete. Most recently he had been a principal for a school in the Tripp/Delmont district. Glodt says he believes Hansen will be a good fit for the job as he returns to Pierre.
Glodt says he’s happy that Hansen accepted the position and believes he will be a good addition to the district’s leadership team.
Hansen’s selection awaits school board approval. Glodt says Hansen’s hiring could be made official at a special budget meeting coming up on June 7.
