PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) A water main break early this morning in a central Pierre neighborhood spilled a good amount of water, but crews were able to restore water service to nearby homes. City Utilities Director Brad Palmer says a ten inch water main broke on Broadway Avenue between Van Buren and Jackson Avenues about 5:00 a.m. Palmer says the break left a washout along the street and crews are cleaning up the site this morning.
One resident in the vicinity of the break says that right after it happened–it left a large lake of water near the intersection of Broadway and Jackson Avenues and the water rushed down Jackson for a time.
Pierre’s Construction and Operations Manager Lynn Patton says crews will look at the water main today and determine whether they will repair or replace the segment between Jackson and Van Buren.
Palmer says the water main on that segment of Broadway is older pipe and it has had issues with breaks and other problems in recent years.
Crews had the break isolated about 6:00 a.m. this morning. Patton says motorists who use that section of Broadway Avenue will likely have to detour around the area in the coming days.
