FORT PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) Construction is underway to repair shoreline at Campground Number 3 at Oahe Downstream Recreation Area that was damaged during last year’s Missouri River flooding. District Park Supervisor Pat Buscher says construction crews are hauling out truckloads of uprooted trees and excavated soils to stabilize the shoreline near the Stilling Basin. Buscher says high water eroded the river bank and some campsites were lost. In addition to work to stabilize the sloped shore, work will also be done to relocate some campsites that were lost because of the erosion. Camping cabins have been moved to other parts of the campground for the summer, but they will likely be returned to their original waterfront spots next year. Campers should note that even though the campground will open Friday, repair work will continue into next month. Campground No. 1 is open for first-come, first served camping for the next few days and after Friday, campsites can be reserved.
