Sully County Courtroom

ONIDA, S.D. – (DRG News) A change has been made in the court schedule for two South African foreign nationals who were charged in a November shooting south of Onida. 20-year-old Zane Van Der Merwe and 31-year-old Stephan Van Der Berg faced charges after a November 27 shooting that left another man wounded. Gregorio Garcia was injured after a shotgun was discharged. Officials said the shooting was linked to a fight that occurred following a party at a rural Quonset shop south of Onida. Both men hail from South Africa and work as farmhands in South Dakota. The men were charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and Possession of a Loaded Firearm While Intoxicated. Van Der Merwe also faces a charge of Simple Assault. They both pled not guilty to the charges in December. A jury trial had been scheduled to start in the case on May 21, however, court officials say that has been cancelled and a court hearing has been set for both men for Monday, May 14 at 1:30 p.m. in Onida.
