Augusana Pitcher Nominated for National Award




SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Augustana’s Derek Hanson is a semifinalist for the 2012 Tino Martinez Award for the top player in Division II baseball.  The annual honor is named after the former University of Tampa Spartan, United States Olympian, first-round draft pick and Major League Baseball All-Star, Tino Martinez.  Hansen, who was named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Pitcher of the Year on Tuesday, is listed as a utility player on the list. He also landed on the All-NSIC first team as a pitcher and first baseman.  Hansen’s set Augustana and NSIC single-season records in strikeouts, fanning 97 batters in all games and 82 in conference contests. Hansen is 7-3 and owns a 1.19 ERA in 60.2 innings pitched.  Offensively, Hansen leads the Vikings with a .357 batting average. He’s also tops on the team with 35 RBIs.
