PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) The 2012 South Dakota Law Enforcement Memorial Service will be held in Pierre tomorrow. The service is scheduled each year to recognize officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty. Organizer Charlie Wharton says South Dakota’s memorial will be held before National Police Week so that people who want to attend events in the nation’s capital can do so.
The newest names on the memorial along Capitol Lake are Ryan McCandless and Nick Armstrong. The former officers died in August of last year when they were shot by a man with a concealed handgun near a Rapid City intersection. Wharton says some of their family members are expected to be present at tomorrow’s events in Pierre.
Wharton says 177 officers lost their lives in the line of duty last year across the country.
Tomorrow’s schedule includes the wreath-laying ceremony at a law enforcement memorial in Pierre at 9:30 a.m. and a service at the Madison Avenue Church of Christ, which will include Governor Dennis Daugaard as the keynote speaker.
Wharton says everyone is welcome to attend the memorial events-to pay their respects and honor law officers who have served the state and lost their lives.
