PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) A one-year-old state law has been invoked following the untimely passing of long-time McPherson County Auditor Steve Serr. Serr passed away on Saturday at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital in Aberdeen. Since the June 5th election is less than thirty days away, the McPherson County Commission passed a resolution requesting that the Secretary of State’s Office conduct the primary election next month. The resolution asking for Secretary of State Jason Gant’s assistance passed unanimously by the County Commission. This is the first time that SDCL 12-18-41-which allows the Secretary of State to conduct a local election-has been used. Gant says his office will be working closely with the county to ensure a smooth June primary election. After the election, Gant says his staff will consult and train the person who the county appoints to the position to make sure the new auditor is fully prepared to conduct elections in the fall.
Funeral services for Serr, who was 64, will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Eureka Reformed Church. Burial will be at the Eureka City Cemetery.
