PHILIP, S.D. (AP) – A 63-year-old South Dakota man has been charged with vehicular homicide after turning himself into authorities following a crash that killed a Pierre woman last month. The South Dakota Highway Patrol says Walt Taton of Faith was charged Thursday after turning himself in at the Haakon County Sheriff’s Office. In addition to vehicular homicide, Taton also was charged with vehicular battery and driving under the influence of alcohol.
The charges stem from an April 28 crash along Highway 34 near Hayes.
Taton was driving when he collided head-on with another car, killing 28-year-old passenger Heather Unser. Taton was hospitalized after the crash while the other driver suffered injuries that were not life-threatening.
