Bond Set for Faith Man Charged in April 28 Crash Near Hayes

PHILIP, S.D. – (DRG News) Bond has been set at $50,000 cash for a 63-year-old Faith man who faces charges linked to a two vehicle accident that resulted in the death of a Pierre woman. Walt Taton turned himself in to the Haakon County Sheriff’s Office in Philip and was formally charged yesterday with Vehicular Homicide, Vehicular Battery and DUI. Taton was driving a pickup that collided head-on with a van early on the morning of April 28 west of Hayes on Highway 34. A passenger in the van, 28-year-old Heather Unser, died as the result of the crash and the van’s driver, 21-year-old Sadie Clark of Yankton received serious, but non-life threatening injuries. Taton was also injured after the crash and was hospitalized for a time. Haakon County Sheriff Fred Koester says Taton is being held in a Winner jail. The next hearing in the case has been set for May 30 at 1:00 p.m. in Philip.
