Riggs High Jazz Band to Hold Spring Big Band Dance on Saturday

Musical Note

PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) The Riggs High Jazz Band will hold its Spring Big Band Dance this Saturday at Riggs High School. The dance is a fundraiser and is being used this year to help gather money to pay for new band uniforms. Admission is $5.00. The two jazz bands will perform during the dance, as will the local group Over Forte. Some selections to be played Saturday include “Hocus Pocus”, “Baby Drives a Fast Car”, “Mr. Lucky” and Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy”. Riggs High Juniors Frank Turner and John Ricketts are both jazz band members. Turner plays the trombone and bass guitar and Ricketts plays piano. Turner says the students enjoy the music and have fun putting on the Big Band Dance.

Ricketts says people of all ages come to the dance each year.

Last year, the dance helped pay for a band trip, but this school year, the focus, according to Turner will be to use the dance proceeds to help pay for uniforms.

Turner and Ricketts say the band members were able to vote on what they want the new uniforms to look like and black was selected as the color of choice.
Many people attend the Big Band Dance year after year. Saturday’s dance starts at 8:00 p.m. and will be held in the Riggs High Gym.
