Pierre Woman Victim of Two Vehicle Crash West of Hayes



PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) A Pierre woman died in a two vehicle accident that occured early this morning on Highway 34. The South Dakota Highway Patrol says the crash occured about 12:15 a.m.; five miles west of Hayes when a westbound pickup drifted into the eastbound lane and collided head-on with a van. The driver of the 2004 Ford F350 pickup was 53-year-old Walt Taton of Faith. In the 2009 Dodge Caravan were the driver, 21-year-old Sadie Clark of Yankton and her passenger, 28-year-old Heather Unser of Pierre. The patrol says Taton and Clark received serious non-life threatening injuries. Unser’s injuries were fatal. Clark and Unser were not wearing seatbelts and had to be extricated from the van. Taton was wearing a seatbelt. All three were brought to St. Mary’s Healthcare Center in Pierre. The crash remains under investigation, but the patrol says alcohol is believed to be a factor and charges are still being determined. Several agencies responded to the early morning crash, including the Haakon County Sheriff’s Office, Philip Ambulance and Midland Fire and Rescue Squad.
