PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) The Pierre Volunteer Fire Department was called out yesterday to the report of a fire in a tree near the Becker Hanson building along Broadway Avenue. Jason Roggow, who is a firefighter for the PFD, says responders found the fire was burning in some dead grass at the base of a large tree. Much of the small blaze had been extinguished by a Highway Patrolman before firefighters arrived at the scene. Roggow says the fire department spent a few minutes doing some “mop up” work and used water back packs to wet the burned materials down. He says it appears that someone had attempted to start fires in multiple locations nearby, but they did not ignite. The fire call was logged yesterday around 6:40 p.m.
