PIERRE, S.D. – In two weeks, the baseball season will begin for the Pierre Post 8 American Legion baseball team. Post 8 is scheduled to host the Aberdeen Smittys on Saturday May 12th in a doubleheader and then play Aberdeen and Rapid City Post 320 on Sunday May 13th. First year head coach Scott Hesla moves up from the 15-16 Teener team to take over the Post 8 program replacing Bob Sullivan who moved to Nebraska. Hesla says that numbers are down at the Legion level this year with only 13 players currently signed up. But at the 13-14 level, the number of players registered to play is close to 50. Indoor workouts have stopped as the team has moved outside taking advantage of the mild weather experienced this spring. The city is currently working on Hyde Stadium getting it ready for the upcoming season, so practices have been moved to Dan Kelley Field in Southeast Pierre which has recovered from last years flood in remarkable shape. Coach Hesla says they have been able to work on some limited hitting but has gotten plenty of defensive work and fielding practice under their belt. The Post 8 Legion schedule has 52 games scheduled including tournaments in Rapid City and Aberdeen as well as Pierre hosting the Koester Memorial Tournament. The Region tournament this year will be played in Sturgis with the State Tournament being held in Aberdeen.
