G F & P Honors Employees for Flood Relief Effort

PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) Several Game, Fish and Parks Wildlife Division employees are sharing an annual award that is given each year to employees who work together for various group projects. The Division Excellence in Teamwork Award was dedicated to all employees who played a role in the 2011 Missouri River flood-prevention and relief efforts. Wildlife Division Director Tony Leif says he believes the efforts of G F & P staff during the flooding of 2011 exemplifies the division’s commitment to serving South Dakota’s people. Response efforts by Wildlife Division employees included staffing at the State Emergency Operations Center; transporting sandbags, pumps, vehicles, boats and other flood-related materials; signing, inspection, security and wildlife control for levees; search and rescue teams; assisting homeowners on fish kill and disposal issues and coordinating water closures with the Governor’s Office. More than 23,400 hours were expended to provide relief and support during the flood period. About 80 G F & P staffers took part in flood work in the Pierre/Fort Pierre area.
