SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) – South Dakota prison officials have renamed the training academy for a corrections officer killed a year ago during a botched prison escape.
Thursday marks the one year anniversary of the death of Ronald Johnson.
Johnson was working alone on his 63rd birthday when two inmates attacked him with a pipe, wrapped his head in plastic wrap and left him to die.
Warden Doug Weber says Johnson was well liked and respected by both his colleagues and the inmates. He says the renaming of the academy is a fitting tribute.
The interior of the building has recently been upgraded, and a new sign and flowers were added to the exterior.
Three inmates were charged in Johnson’s death. Two have been sentenced to death, and a third was given life.
